BREAKING: Seasonal Depression Officially Over

Your friendly reminder to go sit outside, eat some fruit, and get a drink with your friends.

There truly is no feeling quite like the day you wake up ready to run a 400 meter dash when the seasonal depression finally defrosts. Real-life example of that feeling is Natasha Bedingfield in the “Unwritten” music video.

The world is our oyster! The Wicked trailer is out! Women in the music industry are working late (because they’re singers) to pump out new albums and for that reason alone we are eternally grateful. Acknowledgments go to you, ladies!

A few weeks ago, I was talking to someone about my goals and where I want to be in 5, 10, 15 years. Without even realizing it, I started listing reasons why those goals weren’t likely to happen: “only if I can do XYZ” or “but XYZ is in the way.” (Good ole imposter syndrome!) She, so kindly, stopped me and said “Those really aren’t excuses, there’s no reason you can’t start today.” I haven’t been able to stop thinking about how right she was.

I find myself looking from Point A to Point Z and thinking, “Okay how the hell am I gonna get all the way over there?” Spoiler alert: there are no rules. Move at your own pace, your timeline. Just work on getting to Point B!

It feels insane to be quoting this but we can’t forget when the one and only Sir Isaac Newton said, “An object in motion stays in motion.” Probably would’ve been helpful if I had a breakthrough with the 1st Law of Motion* in seventh grade rather than at age 25, but wow does it resonate with me so much!

It’s so simple. Just take one step in the direction you want to go: Go on one first date. Talk to your boss about what growing in your role looks like. Download a budgeting app. Run for 15 minutes. It is so much easier to continue once you begin. We talk ourselves out of things we want just because of how hard it seems to get to the end. Don’t count yourself out. If I can make it through a heavy weight-lifting strength and conditioning workout class without passing out, you can do anything.

What I love most about spring is it reminds us of how many chances we get in life to get back on the horse and start again. Those moments in the depths of mid-January when you’re feeling trapped or stuck or frustrated — spring shows up just in time and everything gets a little easier. Take some pressure off yourself and look at all the steps you’ve already taken. You got this.

*Please don’t ask me what the other 2 Laws of Motion are.

✍️ Weekly REPORT

Reading: Most recently I read Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton. This was my first read of Dolly’s and I can confidently say I’m hooked. She perfectly describes so many of the feelings you go through at this stage in life and makes you feel a lot less crazy knowing how universal these experiences are.

Currently reading If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha. Just started — thoughts to come!

Eating (+ drinking): Last weekend we walked from the Tippity Top (okay from 125th St.) to the Tippity Bottom of Manhattan and here’s everything we ate, drank, + did!

Playing: If you’re also the friend corralling the group to play a board game at an apartment party, Think Fast is your new best friend.

Obsession: It would be rude of me not to mention Miss. Swift and The Tortured Poets Department. Ask me again in a week but current top 3: Fresh Out The Slammer, Guity as Sin?, and The Prophecy.

Recommending: Hacks on MAX! Very underrated hilarious show with top-notch writing. It’s about an iconic female comedian who’s forced to work with a Gen-Z comedy writer to salvage her career. Season 3 just dropped so you can get caught up in no time!

Treat: If I pass Tate’s Coconut Crisp Cookies in the snack aisle I cannot and will not bring myself to walk away.

📆 IRL: A Very Happy Medium!

Two weeks ago, Facebook invited Not Wasting My Twenties and Born Zillennial to partner with them on an event for members in the NYC area.

We hosted our Find Your Hobby event at Happy Medium where people trickled in after work to enjoy the most stunning spread of food (see below!), delicious drinks in sustainable glasses they could take home, and do some art with other 20-somethings/Zillennials. We had such a blast meeting some of our members in real life and can’t wait for the next one. Thank you to everyone for coming!

Where should we bring the next event? Tell us here!
